An early morning fire in Point Fortin on Tuesday claimed the life of a 75 year old pensioner.
According to reports, several residents of the Senior Citizens Home in Techier Village were awoken to the screams of Michael Cornum around 3am.
The Home is said to be made up of several buildings of which at least 20 residents occupy apartments.
Residents who lived in the same building said they saw Mr. Cornum attempting to out a fire with a towel in the kitchen area and ran to get help. However, they said the fire spread quickly, trapping Mr. Cornum inside.
Residents said they used at least three fire extinguishers to get Mr. Cornum out, but to no avail.
A Matron in the Home, Sharmin Billie, said he had been a resident at the Home for years and would cook every night for himself.
She could not say whether that could have been the cause of the fire, but said his screams before his untimely death is all she could think about.
