The Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO) has been recognised for its strong financial performance and operational efficiency.
PLIPDECO won the prestigious Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA) Port of the Year Award for 2024 at the 54th Annual General Meeting, Conference, and Exhibition in St. Maarten.
At a Recognition Ceremony on Friday, Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan, commended the Corporation’s success and outlined the Government’s continued focus on strengthening Trinidad and Tobago’s maritime sector.
Looking beyond PLIPDECO, Minister Sinanan emphasised the Government’s strategic vision for the maritime sector, particularly in Port of Spain.
He challenged stakeholders to match PLIPDECO’s efficiency and make the capital city’s port more competitive by 2025.
“The level of skill set that we have in both ports, Trinidad and Tobago, could achieve that logistics hub that Mr. Annisette was speaking about. And I give you the assurance that is exactly where the Government head is. That is why we are currently in the evaluation stage with the privatisation of the Port of Port of Spain.”
Minister Sinanan said the Government views the port and maritime industries as major forms of diversification for the economy.
“Our location, the skill set of our staff in Trinidad, the Shipping Association… I am sure Trinidad will be able to attract everybody to come here and do business, especially in the maritime and shipping sectors. The Government is focused on improving the port facilities and also the logistics of ship repairs.”
