Prime Minister Stuart Young is expected to travel to Jamaica on Wednesday, March 26th, where he will meet with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Caricom Leaders, including Prime Minister Young, met on Friday in an emergency virtual session to prepare for a visit by the US Secretary of State.
The Office of the Prime Minister confirmed on Saturday that Prime Minister Young will meet with Secretary Rubio.
Their discussions are expected to focus on U.S. foreign policy and the effect on Trinidad and Tobago and the wider region.
The statement from the PM’s Office says Prime Minister Young believes the bilateral discussions provide a strategic opportunity to highlight the importance of the relationship between Trinidad and Tobago, CARICOM and the United States, and to focus on exploring areas for the deepening of cooperation.
The Prime Minister notes that his meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State is in keeping with his undertaking to continue to engage in dialogue at the highest level of the United States administration for the benefit of all the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Secretary Rubio’s visit comes on the heels of threats from the US administration to revoke the US visas of regional officials whose countries have utilised Cuban medical personnel to support their health programmes.
Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs, Dr. Amery Browne, will accompany the Prime Minister to Jamaica.
