The People’s National Movement (PNM) has conceded the 2025 General Election.
PNM Political Leader Dr. Keith Rowley made the announcement at Balisier House just after 10pm on Monday night, stating that it was not a good night for the PNM.
He said even though results were still coming in, it was clear that the PNM had lost the election and will be walking away with 10 to 12 seats.
“We have done it before, conceding defeat on Election Night, but tomorrow is a new day. We’ve had to concede on a night in December in 1986, we conceded in 1995, and we conceded in 2010. So this 70-year-old party, sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t win. Tonight is one of those nights where, surprisingly, we have not done very well in a General Election.”
Dr. Rowley said the PNM will move expeditiously into Opposition, and a decision will be made on the next Opposition Leader.
“The General Council will meet on Wednesday and will direct the elected members of the house as to who should be supported for the position of Opposition Leader. That is a position we have held before and even from there, we provide yeoman service to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”
Meanwhile, PNM Chairman and outgoing Prime Minister Stuart Young said even though the party put forward what he thought was a good proposal, the electorate has spoken. However, he said the PNM will be back on the road, serving the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
“We rebuild, and we encourage all the young people to come forth. We have the experienced leaders with us still, and I could tell you something: from tomorrow morning, you will see a strong PNM back on the road, back servicing the population of Trinidad and Tobago, and I certainly look forward to playing a part in that and a leadership role in that.”
Prime Minister Stuart Young said the population will judge the UNC in the next few months and years on whether they will be able to deliver on their promises.
“I have won my seat, so I will still be there in Parliament and believe you me, Trinidad and Tobago, despite tonight, I will fight Trinidad and Tobago, and this party will fight for Trinidad and Tobago, and we will hold the UNC and that coalition of self-interests to the coals, and that is the new job.”
According to Mr. Young, every time the PNM rebuilds, they come back stronger.
