The People’s National Movement (PNM) Women’s League is appalled by the continued pattern of religious and cultural disrespect demonstrated by the United National Congress.
The Women’s League responded to a Facebook post on March 21st by UNC Executive Member Khadijah Ameen, where she referred to Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan, as “Rawan Sinanan.”
The PNM’s Women’s League said blatant misuse of Hindu religious symbolism to attack political opponents is not just disrespectful, it is an outright insult to the Hindu community and the sacred traditions we hold dear.
And further stated Hinduism is not a weapon to be wielded in partisan battles, for political expediency. The Women’s League is calling on the UNC, who purports themselves to be the leading East-Indian party ((and Ms. Ameen who has a large Hindu population within her constituency,)) to put an end to this reckless exploitation of race and religion. And said this dangerous rhetoric does nothing but divide our nation further, sowing resentment where there should be unity.
