Steps have been taken for the consideration of potential amendments to the Hindu Marriage Regulations.
The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Legal Affairs confirmed on Friday that these steps were taken following a collaborative process led by Senator Renuka Sagramsingh-Sooklal.
Friday’s statement said Attorney General, Senior Counsel Reginald Armour, has referred further consideration of a report prepared with respect to these proposed amendments to the Hindu Marriage Regulations under the Hindu Marriage Act, Chap. 45:03, to the Law Reform Commission.
It said the AG has also directed the Law Reform Commission to examine the potential for similar policy consideration for reform in other sectors of the national community, with a view to recommendations for greater national recognition of the rights of women and recognition of the value of the core fabric of family life as the pivotal national societal institution.
