Protest For Better Treatment Of Refugees

Representative of the Community Refugee Network and human rights activist, Yesenia Gonzales, is claiming that Venezuelans are being treated unfairly when they turn up at Immigration Offices for their order of supervision.

At a protest on Tuesday morning at the San Fernando Immigration Office, she said they wait for long hours on the pavement for a process which she described as “quick.”

Ms. Gonzales said the Registered Venezuelans under the Amnesty process or work permits, and those registered by the UNHCR with Refugee or Asylum Seeker status are forced to voluntarily repatriate themselves and purchase their own ticket to leave Trinidad and Tobago by Immigration Officers – something which she said they cannot afford to do.
