The Police Service Commission has promoted Mrs. Erla Harewood-Christopher to the office of Commissioner of Police, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, with effect from February 3, 2023.
On Friday, Retired Justice Judith Jones, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, presented Mrs. Harewood-Christopher with her letter of promotion to the office.
Also in attendance were members of Police Service Commission which include Maxine Attong, Maxine King, Rajiv Persad and Ian Ramdhanie.
Director of Personnel Administration Corey Harrison and Acting Deputy Director of Personnel Administration Helen Warner also witnessed the presentation.
While acting as Police Commissioner, Mrs.Harewood-Christopher topped the merit list of candidates for the substantive position of Commissioner of Police and was unanimously voted for the post in Parliament.
The newly sworn-in Top CoP moved from substantive Assistant Commissioner to substantive Commissioner of Police, skipping the rank of Deputy Commissioner, which she only held in an acting capacity.
While she is due to retire on May 15 when she turns 60, there is the authority to extend the period of service or to have a civilian appointed on contract.
Mrs. Harewood-Christopher created history by becoming the first woman to hold the substantive position of Police Commissioner in the country.
