Public Opinion Key To Fireworks Legislation

Port of Spain North/St. Ann’s West Member of Parliament, Stuart Young, says it is his view that fireworks should not be sold to the public, but believes the public must first be consulted on whether such a decision is taken.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mr. Young said the recent fire to four homes in Quarry Street in Port of Spain was due to a lantern, according to an eyewitness.

He assured that the Cabinet is already involved on the issue of fireworks, and that the Attorney General has been given three months to get the views of the population before a decision is taken.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, Anil Juteram, along with former Chairman, Terry Rondon, donated mattresses, clothes, food, and other supplies to assist in giving relief to the over 20 people affected by the fire.

They both said that such a circumstance has united the country to ensure affected residents get back on their feet.

Mr. Young said although legislation alone will not stop people from using fireworks, it is a step in the right direction and urged all citizens to voice their opinions on the matter in the coming weeks.
