Qatar Becomes First Host Nation To Lose Opening Game

Ecuador marked their fourth World Cup appearance with a 2-0 win against hosts Qatar on the opening day of the 2022 edition at Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar today.

A record attendance 67 thousand 3 hundred and 72 football fans showed up to the party 21 miles away from Doha.

Qatar also broke a record becoming the first host nation in the World Cup’s 92 year history to lose their opening game.

Enner Valencia had one disallowed in the third but found the opening goal of this year’s tournament in the 16th.

The Ecuador captain gave himself a head start on the golden boot when he completed a brace in the 31st.

To their credit Qatar were able to shore up their defence for the remainder of the match. Netherlands and Senegal will round out Group A’s opening Round when they meet at midday on Monday.
