Rain Respite For Windies

The West Indies avoided the follow-on but are still in loads of trouble at the end of day 3 in the first test versus Sri Lanka in Galle. They closed the rain interrupted day on 224 for 9, still 162 runs behind Sri Lanka’s first innings score.

Tea was taken early after rain washed out much of the post-lunch session. Only four overs were completed after lunch before the ground staff was called into action, but there was still enough time for Sri Lanka to dismiss Rahkeem Cornwall off the last ball of the session for an aggressive 39. His partner in a 49-run stand, Joshua Da Silva is not out on 11.
Kyle Mayers who finished on 45 and Jason Holder 36, put up the early resistance on the day with a seventh wicket stand of 63 but were both removed in quick succession to restore Sri Lanka’s tight grip on the match.
Ramesh Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama are the main wicket takers for the host with 3 dismissals each.
If the weather improves, play will open on day 4 with Trinbagonians Joshua Da Silva and Shannon Gabriel at the wicket.
