Sandals Resorts International Group Chairman Adam Stewart will visit Tobago next Monday to discuss the possibility of renegotiating a deal to have a hotel on the island.
Speaking at Thursday’s Post-Cabinet Media Briefing, Prime Minister Stuart Young said Mr. Stewart has agreed to meet with key stakeholders to discuss potential investments in Tobago.
“Mr. Stewart has agreed to come and meet with myself, the Chief Secretary Farley and other stakeholders in Tobago on Monday coming, Monday the 7th. So people of Tobago in particular, this is a fabulous opportunity. We need to learn from the mistakes of the past and not allow a few misguided naysayers stop the potential development of the economy of Tobago. This is for Tobago.”
Reflecting on past negotiations with the Sandals Group, Prime Minister Young expressed optimism about the renewed engagement.
“Remember we had negotiated with Mr. Stewart and his then father, Butch Stewart, for not only a Sandals but also a ‘Beaches’ in Tobago and a new Greg Norman-designed golf course, and unfortunately we allowed that opportunity to slip away from us.”
On March 16th, during his penultimate day as the then Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Rowley called out two people from Tobago in particular to sit down with Sandals and have discussions.
Prime Minister Stuart Young assured that these two Tobagonians would be invited to the meeting on Monday.
“I spoke to Chief Secretary Farley and invited him to the meeting on Monday. I tried to get Mr. Watson Duke before coming here. I wasn’t able to get him, but the answer is yes, he will be invited.”
