Mandated to nurture and develop a culture of self-help and self-reliance in Trinidad and Tobago, the National Commission for Self Help distributed 41 Grants within the San Fernando region on Friday.
Friday’s Self Help Grant Distribution Ceremony was held at the Pleasantville Community Centre.
Chairman of the National Commission for Self Help, Hayden Mitchell, opened the event with an important commitment to the community.
“By the nature of the Grants – there are Emergency Repair Grants, or these Material Assisted Grants. It means that the most vulnerable need it in a timely manner. As the Chairman, I give my commitment to make sure that the Commission re-examines its processes so that we can serve you, the most vulnerable or the people that need it, in a quicker and more timely manner.”
Interim CEO Akino Greene acknowledged his team’s dedication in making this Grant process successful.
“This event represents not just a moment of celebration but a testament to the vital work we do as a Commission, providing meaningful assistance to individuals and families across T&T.”
Mr. Greene presented the first Grant to Miss Josanne Moses, followed by 40 other Grant recipients who were called to the stage.
The Grants awarded to families included Emergency Assistance and Reconstruction Grants, among others.
New mother, Natasha Williams, while cradling her 21 day old baby in her arms, said she was delighted to receive the call about the Grant a day before the ceremony. She expressed her gratitude to the National Commission for Self Help, noting that the Grant would make a significant difference.
“I had applied since 2015, so that’s like nine years ago, and I got the call yesterday and it was exhilarating because from then to now, not much has changed. It is a blessing because I just had this baby. He is 21 days old and it was a blessing to know sometimes when you are going through stuff and then good stuff comes, it does be a blessing.”
Another Grant recipient, Janelle Pelloo, said she waited five years to receive her Grant. She shared her thoughts on the timing of the award.
“I’ve been waiting five years but today, I am thankful and grateful because God’s timing is the best timing.”
