Senate Debates Civil Aviation Amendment Bill

Those debating the Civil Aviation Act all agree on its importance as this law governs the life and safety of those using the air for travel.

What the Senators could not agree on, however, were the conditionalities for members serving on the Civil Aviation Board.

Attorney General Reginald Armour says the Act needs to be amended, pointing out that term limits on the Board were preventing the recruitment of quality personnel. He explained that the Board had expired on September of this year and there had been difficulty in finding replacement members even though the search had started in January. The amendment would allow the last Board to be reappointed.

Opposition Senator Jerlean John questioned why this was necessary with so many qualified people in the aviation field.

The Senate continues to debate whether the amendment will be beneficial to the country and the industry.
