Senator Laurence Hislop is questioning the Tobago House of Assembly’s priorities and expenditure of funds since assuming office in 2021.
In his contribution to the Senate’s Budget Debate on Monday, Senator Hislop said that previous administrations have been able to accomplish much more with a similar budgetary allocation percentage, which ranged from 3.9% to 4.30% between 2001 and 2021.
He feels the year-on-year increases, especially over the last two years, have not translated into any significant development on the island.
Senator Hislop said the THA is the only entity within the Government system that has the ability to manoeuvre these finances according to the island’s needs.
But with the Scarborough Secondary School “falling into the sea” as the Senator put it, and dilapidated roadways, he is not convinced that the $400 million allotted to development in the last fiscal year is being wisely appropriated.
