Suspect Detained Outside Port Of Spain Prison

The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service informs that on Wednesday December 08, 2021, at around 7.00am, an individual was observed attempting to throw a package over the rear wall of the Port of Spain Prison on Pembroke Street.

According to an initial report, Prisons Officers of the Emergency Response Unit at the Port of Spain Prison were conducting a surveillance exercise when the individual was observed. The rapid response by said officers resulted in the individual being detained. The package was confiscated and officers of the Central Police Station were notified.

The package contained 141 grammes of plant-like material, ten packets of cigarettes and one GoL smartphone. The individual, who is an ex inmate, was escorted to the Central Police Station where he is assisting police with enquiries.

Commissioner of Prisons, Mr. Dennis Pulchan applauded the quick action of the Officers of the Emergency Response Unit, Port of Spain Prison, and is reminding all that it is an offence punishable by law under Act 25 of 2019, Miscellaneous Provisions (Law Enforcement Officers) to traffic items into the nation’s prisons or attempt to. As such, persons are advised to cease and desist from doing so. The Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service continues to uphold its mandate of maintenance of safety and security within the nation’s prisons.
