A popular Tobago hardware was almost completely destroyed and millions lost after fire gutted the structure on Friday morning. Fire officials say it is a case of suspected arson.
An estimated $15 million in losses and $5.4 million in damages have been reported while five are left homeless and seven jobless.
Around 3:15am, fire appliances responded to a fire at Dave’s Discount Hardware in Canaan, which is owned by Basil and Catherine Kisoon. The structure includes a residential space on the first floor and the hardware on the ground valued at $5.6 million while the contents were valued at $15 million. All contents of the structure were destroyed.
Residents of the home were alerted by smoke and the smell of gas and were able to evacuate the building and secure their vehicles. The Fire Service’s Fire Prevention Unit and the Crown Point Police Station are continuing investigations.
