Criminologist and Social Psychologist Professor Ramesh Deosaran believes an analysis should be done to determine what happens to abused children when they leave the various Children’s Homes.
Professor Deosaran said based on a study he did back in 1997, months after the Sabga Report was completed, abused children from these Homes lose their sense of self and identity since they were not properly cared for.
Professor Deosaran said when children leave these Homes, they are vulnerable as their minds are not strong enough to resist temptation. As a result, they join friends who also engage in deviant behaviour and in most cases, they get involved in a life of crime which eventually leads to a prison sentence.
