The University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus is applauding the idea from Education Minister Dr. Nyan Gadsby-Dolly to include Spanish at the Primary School level.
Speaking to TTT News during the University’s Spanish Language Day on Monday, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education, Professor Elizabeth Walcott-Hackshaw, welcomed the move and offered assistance to improve Spanish literacy in the Caribbean.
And Spain’s Ambassador to T&T, Fernando Nogales, said such an initiative in Primary Schools would assist students at an early age to learn Spanish, and pointed out that it will provide opportunities for them in the long run. He said Spanish-speaking Embassies will also be up to the challenge to assist where they can in rolling out Spanish as a subject at the Primary level.
Professor Walcott-Hackshaw said such a move would also help improve the level of grades in Spanish at the CSEC and CAPE levels.
