The Ministry of Public Administration continues its effort to improve the public service’s eco-system in Trinidad and Tobago. Tobago got involved as forty eight (48) senior public officers of the Tobago House of Assembly and Office of the Prime Minister Central Administrative Services engaged in a recently held Commonwealth Advance Training in Government Performance Management.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony for the Commonwealth Advance Training in Government Performance Management, Minister of Public Administration Allyson West said the Ministry’s goal is to encourage a results-driven management approach. She said the training which included 228 public officers across Trinidad and Tobago aims to accomplish this.
“I always believe proper management of an organisation has to start from the top and then trickles down so we started with the managers so they have the right approach to management. They commit to delivery based on results but you need to trickle that down to the public service.”
Minister West also informed of plans to develop an electronic human resource management system to improve processes in the public service.
“Which would allow us to manage our public servants from recruitment to post-retirement and allow us to more efficiently manage all manners of things so that we can move our focus away from mechanical management to effective and strategic management of the public service.”
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine urged participants to implement the training received to improve the level of service being offered at offices in Tobago.
“This training speaks to the need for there to be constant learning and relearning and retooling even as you deliver results for the people of the country. Secondly this training exercise allows us to transform the image of the public service.”
The program was facilitated by the Commonwealth Secretariat.
