Two trade union members are representing the constituencies of La Brea and Point Fortin under the banner of the United National Congress.
President General of the Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union, Ancel Roget, was pleased to introduce their candidates for election. He said Clyde Elder from the Communications Workers’ Union will go up as the candidate for La Brea, and Ernesto Kesar for Point Fortin.
“We feel very positive. We feel that we can definitely make an impact in these Elections and we are about to take claim and take those two seats.”
Mr. Roget hailed the moment as a winning one for the nation. He said these candidates represent the voice of the worker and will put forward the interests of this group in society.
When asked why he is not standing as a candidate, Mr. Roget assured that while he is not in the forefront, his role will be one of support.
“I have a role to play and I certainly will continue to play that role to ensure that labour gets what it deserves. Labour is not getting what it deserves right now. We turn the wheels of the economy. Working people in this country, at all levels, go to work, ensure that they pay their taxes, law-abiding citizens.”
The labour leader said for nine years no labour legislation has been brought to Parliament. He said once elected to the seats of La Brea and Point Fortin, the labour-orientated candidates will change this trend, and the workers’ agenda will be heightened.
