Trinidad and Tobago has joined the Global AI Salon, a network of cities fostering discussions on artificial intelligence.
Managing Director of GNC Labs, Gerard Llanos, says this moment in history is comparable to some of the greatest technological advancements of the past.
“This is the electric light bulb of our generation. This is the robot’s manufacturing of our generation. This is the tractor of our generation. We may not recognise it as yet, but nothing is the same, and it affects literally everybody.”
With artificial intelligence rapidly evolving, Mr. Llanos says the focus must be on how it integrates into everyday life—including parenting.
He warns that AI’s influence extends beyond what meets the eye, shaping children’s experiences, and even guiding their interests in ways parents may not anticipate.
In the discussion, one parent expressed his amazement at how pervasive AI is, and its effect on youth.
“I have to wonder, you know it’s like I have a sister, her son, he spends almost eight hours a day in VR, virtual reality, running around playing with children who we think are children that nobody knows. I’m like. ‘Sis you need to get him off of this, there’s a real world.’ I’m wondering is AI now fostering delusion, that they’re functioning in an artificial world?”
But while AI presents challenges, Mr. Llanos emphasises that the responsibility lies with parents and guardians to guide children in this new digital landscape.
The AI Salon series will continue with eleven more events this year, each exploring different aspects of AI’s role in business and society. He believes AI should not be seen as a replacement but as a tool to enhance creativity and innovation.
