This country made history at the 2022 World Police and Fire Games in Rotterdam on Thursday, after an officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service placed 1st in Karate Kumite category.
Shiva Sookdeo was the sole representative for the TTPS in the sport of Karate and participated in the ‘Kata’ category on Wednesday where he placed 5th, but had all eyes on him on Thursday by capturing the Gold medal in the ‘Kumite’ category the following day.
Sookdeo, who is an Acting Corporal attached to the Police Academy Academics Department, had four fights in the tournament and was involved in a round-robin event where he won three and lost one.
The ‘Kumite’ Black Belt event involved participants to be over 85 kilogrammes and 30 plus years of age.
Sookdeo was the first police officer from the TTPS to enter into Karate at the Games.
More than 10,000 competitors from 70 countries participated in the Games in 63 sporting events across 45 locations throughout the Netherlands from the 22nd to the 31st of July.
