The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is pleading with motorists to exercise greater care and responsibility on the nation’s roads.
This, after the country’s road fatality rate jumped to 115 following a car crash that took the lives of two persons in Couva on Thursday morning.
According to police, at around 3am, officers responded to a report of a road traffic collision along the Southern Main Road, Mc Bean, Couva where they met fire officers attempting to extricate two occupants from the wreckage of a Nissan Cefiro.
In a statement on Thursday evening, Senior Superintendent of the Traffic & Highway Patrol Branch, Garvin
Simon, noting that these tragic incidents are unnecessary and preventable, likened a motor vehicle to a powerful weapon. He reiterated that if used irresponsibly, it can seriously injure or kill the user and other persons.
Senior Superintendent Simon said while officers at the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch will continue relentless efforts in both enforcement and education, road users must also do their part by obeying speed limits, wearing seatbelts, and ensuring a sober, alert driver is always behind the steering wheel.
