Update On Bomb Scare Investigation

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service says progress is being made in the investigation into last Friday’s Bomb Threats at over 50 Primary and Secondary schools throughout the country.

In an update on the investigation on Thursday afternoon, the TTPS confirmed that following the emailed bomb threats, no explosives were found by bomb technicians.
The TTPS said under the supervision of DCP Intelligence and Investigation Curt Simon, the Cyber Unit as well as the Research Analytical Unit(RAU) made an assessment of the situation and concluded that the threats could be classified as a cyber ‘hoax”.
They were able to determine that the server used is based in Germany and the ‘resolve host’ of the email is situated in Cyprus. Additionally, two Virtual Private Networks (VPN), located in Switzerland and Panama were used to further mask the identity of the origin of the email.

The TTPS said Investigations also indicate that the email came from an anonymous mail service provider and that locating the anonymous email service provider is key to its investigation. It noted that this is a complex problem and they will continue to partner with international and cross border cyber experts who will work alongside our local experts and telecom providers.
