The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) and several Regional Corporations have received US$100,000 worth of essential, high-demand equipment from the US Embassy and the US Navy.
The 10-tonne truck, generators, shovels, hoses, tents, TVs, wheelbarrows, ropes, chainsaws, and other items were donated to the ODPM in a brief ceremony on Tuesday.
ODPM Chief Executive Officer, Retired Major General Rodney Smart, called the event “historic.”
“I must also express our sincere gratitude thanks to you, Ambassador Bond and Admiral Holsey, for your influence in channelling these high in-demand resources to Trinidad and Tobago.”
US Ambassador Candace Bond highlighted the importance of the friendship between both nations before thanking Commander of the United States Southern Command, Admiral Holsey, for the donation and reaffirming its significance.
“Admiral Holsey has dedicated his career to promoting security and stability and his leadership exemplifies the spirit of partnership and solidarity that we celebrate today.”
Admiral Holsey noted that regional geography leaves Trinidad and Tobago vulnerable to extreme weather events, including manmade disasters.
“Before, during, and after catastrophe, the United States Southern Command stands shoulder to shoulder with our partners to assist. Today, it is my pleasure to present these donations, which represent a total investment of approximately $100,000, and our commitment to building an enduring partnership for the people of Trinidad and Tobago.”
The ceremony ended on an appreciative note with Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds, thanking Ambassador Bond as she approached her end of service to Trinidad and Tobago in her current role.
