Founder of The Cloth, Robert Young, is using Carnival as an opportunity for public expression and presenting Mas Mourning–Becoming Wreaths for Carnival 2022.
The costume design is based on wreaths and made of dried leaves and flowers. The idea of focusing on wreaths aims to manifest a positive way of ritualising the mourning so present during the pandemic.Young also said that this project aims to use simple things and make them significant, symbolic and valuable.
Safety protocols are being observed at the mas cap located at Erthig Street in Belmont so Zoom sessions to support mas makers will be employed. A panel discussion will coincide with the band launch on Thursday and involve panellists like Rapso artist and Jouvert practitioner Wendell Manwarren, Art Therapist Celeste Walters, and Orisha Baba Addelon Braveboy.
The mas may be presented in a digital procession over the Carnival weekend.
