A 26 million dollar investment that will have great benefits to the residents of Woodland, Penal and environs. Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales toured the project and gave a progress report on Tuesday.
The water supply for 39 thousand residents is expected to improve from 1 in 18 to 22 days to 24/3, when the Woodland/ Penal Pipeline Improvement Project is completed.
Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales visited the site on Tuesday to look at the progress. Speaking to the media, the Minister said the project involves the installation of of 400mm transmission Pipeline and 1.9km of 300 mm Transmission Pipeline.
“The fact that the current pipeline 8-inch is not able to supply the volume of water to this growing community, it impacted the supply of water and WASA’s ability to provide these communities with a reliable supply of water. With this major upgrade costing 26 million dollars, we expect to address these issues directly and the 39 to 40 thousand people in Penal, Siparia and surrounding areas are getting a major improvement in their supply of water.”
Minister Gonzales said the Ministry is currently doing a lot of work in the southwest region noting that work is occurring in Granville and Palo Seco which will benefit the communities directly.
“Most of the people who live in this area, they get their water off the thick village booster station which is supplied by water from the Penal water treatment plant as well as the Caroni water treatment plant. Of course those plants are impacted as a result of seasonal conditions but with the coming into operation of a number of wells in the south west region, we’ll be able to remove its sole dependence on Penal and the Caroni water treatment plant and they will benefit from the other wells that will come into operation in the coming months or so.”
The project is expected to be completed by the end of April.
