A worker at the St. James Medical Complex was fatally shot at the institution on Wednesday.
The North West Regional Health Authority (NWRHA) confirms that Jamaal Watts, an employee of the Authority, was shot while performing his assigned duties.
The NWRHA says Watts was subsequently rushed to the Accident and Emergency Department at the St. James Medical Complex, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Police officers responded to the shooting and the NWRHA is assisting with their investigations.
Chief Executive Officer of the NWRHA, Major Anthony Blake, along with the operations team arrived on the scene and spoke directly with the family of the victim and workers at the St. James Medical Complex.
A team has been activated to provide counselling services for both the family of the deceased and staff attached to the institution.
